Smartphones: Sales shine again!
By Leda Cavalcanti
Regardless of their profile, all mothers want to win a smartphone. This is a fact. It is also a fact that this date represents a good deal for industry and retail, especially since technology is this moment’s theme. “Brazilians favor Tech products. For three consecutive years, smartphones have topped the product search list for the date. It symbolizes a highly strategic period for LG”, says Humberto Kang, product manager for the company’s smartphone segment.
In 2020, the smartphone category grew 18% in revenue compared to 2019.
This year, on the date of mothers, the trend is for higher sales, especially for devices with more advanced features.
For decades, the Brazilian has loved technology, says Luciano Barbosa, head of the Xiaomi Brazil Project. “The country is one of our largest markets in Latin America, for several reasons, including increasingly intense work and study hours, which require devices with powerful processors and long-lasting batteries. In addition, the Brazilian is very active in social networks and wants cameras that dialogue with their media. The smartphone is a social item, it materializes the user’s personality.”
Due to changes in smartphone usage profiles, the demand for those with multiple cameras, greater storage space and better batteries has grown, says Cristiano Freitas, director of mobility business at Positivo Tecnologia. “In the pandemic, the smartphone was an ally of those who were isolated, who used it for videoconferences. Today, consumers need the device to study, work, buy, have fun and communicate through the digital medium.
Digital Acceleration
Samsung shares the perception that the digitalization process is accelerating in the country. “Started a few months ago, it should continue throughout 2021, leading people to renew their devices to have the most advanced available and innovative in technology, according to their lifestyle”, comments Renato Citrini, senior product manager for the mobile devices’ division at Samsung Brazil.
Today, the design of connectivity and accessibility is stronger than ever. 2020 was a very transformative year, says Juliana Mott, Motorola’s head of marketing. “As manufacturers, we are reshaping our product, marketing and business strategies to ensure alignment with this new standard. Looking to the future is an opportunity to allow a new wave of innovation to take the lead.”
Input devices and intermediaries make up the fastest growing market in the country, says Junior Favaro, director of sales and marketing at HDM in Brazil, exclusive licensee of the Nokia brand for phones. “People need smartphones that they can trust, with good specifications like security and guaranteed updates, but they don’t want to spend all their savings on a device. We heard these needs and integrated them into the design of our phones, contributing to the democratization of technology.”
Market Innovation
The desire for smartphones is growing and this year it should be no different. Data from research firm GfK show that these devices will remain among the top sellers in 2021, especially premiums. The numbers prove: in 2020, the category grew 18% in revenue compared to 2019. The price of handsets rose 23%, and the number of units sold fell 5%. Following are the products for Mother’s Day.
The demand for smartphones that have multiple cameras, greater storage space and long-lasting batteries is growing.
