FECOMERCIOSP: retail from the adversities perspectives
The year of 2020 was marked by instability and the feeling of insecurity throughout the world, compromising not only people’s health, but also their perspectives and beliefs. In the economy, financial aid, credit and labor flexibility measures prevented damages from being even worse.
With restrictive isolation of lockdown measures of some activities, the São Paulo retail sales, which before the pandemic gave signs of maintaining their recovery from 2019, presented unsatisfactory results, even recording 2-digit drops.
The gradual opening of activities gave some breath to the economy. FecomercioSP forecasts estimate that the São Paulo retail market will end the year with a 2% growth, even then with asymmetrical performances never before seen in the history of the State’s sector. Sectors aimed at essential goods, such as drug stores and supermarkets, have recovered in a more expressive manner, while clothing and vehicle sectors have continued (and remain) to decrease.
The São Paulo retail sector has started the pandemic with 410.8 thousand companies and will start 2021 with 346.6 thousand.
A loss of 60 thousand formal jobs is expected to happen in the area in comparison to 2019, the worst yearly performance since 2010. Businesses’ ability to pull through has also been severely affected. The São Paulo retail sector has started the pandemic with 410.8 thousand companies and will start 2021 with 346.6 thousand.
For 2021, government efforts are required to unblock the business environment and give continuity to the reform’s agenda, aiding companies and jobs. To entrepreneurs, the ability of reinventing themselves is critical in a setting of still many adversities.
