Retail loses BRL 4 million per hour, and changes in the sector will be necessary
Losses in retail are a common phenomenon. Various sectors have these statistics in their records. However, when the damages present exorbitant and threatening figures, it’s time to rethink strategies and invest in improvements to reverse the situation.
According to a survey by Abrappe (Brazilian Association for Loss Prevention) in partnership with KPMG, retail losses in Brazil amount to BRL 4 million per hour throughout the year. In 2023 alone, this figure reached BRL 35 billion. In 2022, it was BRL 31.7 billion. The reasons for these alarming numbers are related to financial damages, product losses, operational issues, among other factors.
The solution is to map the scenario and identify at which stages these losses are occurring. According to Abrappe, these damages fall into two categories: operational losses, which include financial, administrative, and productivity losses, and so-called invisible losses, which include stock errors, unidentified thefts, and even incorrect value registrations.
The proposal to reverse this negative scenario is to invest in various improvements aimed at prevention, such as training, security, clear policies, mapping, and inventory management. Engaging teams is also essential to raise awareness and improve processes. Only in this way will it be possible to focus efforts on increasing profit margins and becoming competitive in the sector.
