Impacts of marketplaces on Brazilian entrepreneurship
Marketplaces have emerged as fundamental to digital entrepreneurship in Brazil. A study conducted by ABComm, in partnership with Shopee, reveals data that reinforces this view and demonstrates the profound impact of the app on the lives of millions of Brazilians: one-third of sellers began their online sales journey on the marketplace. This reflects the accessibility and trust new entrepreneurs have in the online channel, seen as an opportunity for entry and growth in e-commerce.
According to the research, for 30% of local marketplace entrepreneurs, Shopee is the primary source of family income. In times of economic uncertainty, having a stable income source is crucial, and online sales have proven to be an indispensable ally.
The study shows that 40% of entrepreneurs expanded their operations after starting to sell on the marketplace. This growth is driven by the ease of use of the tool and the resources offered, allowing small and medium-sized businesses to scale their operations efficiently.
Shopee alone has 3 million registered Brazilian sellers. According to the research, Shopee sellers also generate employment opportunities for 1.3 million people in the country. In total, 25% of these workers dedicate themselves exclusively to sales on the platform.
More than 40% of the entrepreneurs interviewed have a college degree, and 65% sell exclusively online. This data highlights the role of education in shaping business owners capable of facing the challenges of the digital market. Furthermore, 80% of sellers report significant personal achievements after starting to sell on the platform.
