WHAT TO EXPECT FROM TRADE IN THE SECOND HALF?
Retail trade started the year with a very favorable performance. In the first quarter alone, there was growth of 2.5% in the annual comparison. The most interesting thing: the increase was seen in almost all sectors analyzed by the IBGE, including home appliances, which increased 6.9% in the period. Even with expensive credit, the segment managed to surpass the results of 2022.
What is happening is a strong growth in job creation and, at the same time, in the face of more moderate inflation, an important real gain in revenue. To give you an idea, still based on information from the IBGE, there was an increase, at the beginning of this year, of BRL 27 billion in the mass of income, the resources available to workers.
In this way, families can pay their bills in arrears, quickly reducing defaults, and return with greater force to the commerce and services sectors. There is room in the domestic budget to gradually increase consumption in other segments, such as home appliances, furniture, etc. Although interest rates are high, credit is plentiful, while installment payments are a useful mechanism for financed consumption of goods.
Therefore, FecomercioSP’s expectation is for continued growth throughout the second period of the year, in addition to the possible start of a reduction in interest rates, which will help to stimulate the economy and sales. In the State of São Paulo, specifically, the result for this semester should be a growth of 6% — that is, consumers with better economic conditions and businessmen, on average, obtaining good results.
