Gamer segment gains more importance in January and February 2021
By Dilnara Titara
The home office, distance education and leisure at home increased sales of notebooks, desktops, mice, keyboards and monitors in January and February of 2021. Data from the research firm GfK show that the gamer segment has gained importance in these first two months of the year compared to the same period in 2020. Sales of the video game console, the highest revenue category in this market, increased by 27% in number of units.

Every day there are more players, especially now, when leisure has been taken into the home, says André Teixeira, senior product manager at Acer Brasil. “Data from the last Gamer Brasil Survey (PGB), released in early April, reinforce the idea that digital games are among the main forms of entertainment for 78.9% of Brazilians. They also show that 75.8% started to play even more during social isolation.”
According to the survey, involvement between parents, children and games significantly increased in the last year: 84.1% of parents said they played with their children. In addition to leisure activities, games have become a communication and connection tool, says Cristiane Clausen, Philco’s general director. “It is a promising market and responsible for more than half the value of the entertainment industry. These numbers draw attention.”
Women in the game

The gamer market is, above all, demanding and diverse, says Marina Correia, product manager of the monitor division at Samsung Brazil. “Demanding because it is formed by consumers who need high performance to play and are attached to the smallest technical and aesthetic details when setting up. It is diverse because it involves a huge variety of profiles. There is no longer just that stereotype of the teenager, there are gamers in all age groups, and women have gained a huge space in the market.”
Renato Voltarelli, head of marketing at Logitech Brasil, reveals, through the Game Brasil Survey, that today 51% of the gamer audience in Brazil is female, with the largest age group between 24 and 39 years old. Those over 40 represent 19%. “This shows that the player in Brazil has grown with the generations of past video games and increasingly tends to continue playing, regardless of his life stage.”
The fact is that the Brazilian gamer market has been consolidating itself as one of the largest in global terms, says Luciano Sasso, vice president of sales & marketing consumer audio at Harman in South America. “In recent years, we have followed the structuring of competitive teams, the traditional Brazilian clubs engaging in the sector and the press giving the theme an increasing space.”
Each season, several professional championships strengthen and boost the sector. Lenovo, through its Legion brand, sponsored the CBCS – Brazilian Rainbow Six Siege Championship 2020, to stimulate the presence of women in eSports. “They are already the majority in the gamer universe, representing 51.5% of the public, according to Pesquisa Game Brasil”, says Luiz Sakuma, director of products at Lenovo Brasil.
Optimism with the date

Expectations are positive for Father’s Day, says Eliane Pacheco, marketing manager at OEX Game. “Playing video games has become a habit in the lives of thousands of Brazilians. All categories of the gamer line had a noticeable growth, mainly home office and leisure products, which demand superior quality of resistance when compared to common computer equipment.”
Celebratory dates contribute even more to promote the segment, says André. “We expect a very positive boost in sales of gamers products this year in particular.” Certainly, the trend is for growth in 2021, says John Zak, commercial director of XZone. “Mainly due to the pandemic, as families spend more time at home.”
Optimistic is also Danilo Angi, director of the accessories segment at Multilaser. “The demand for technology in entertainment products has never been so heated. We expect more than 50% growth for this year compared to 2020.” Another optimist is Luciano, from Harman. “In this and the coming years, our perception is that we will have an accelerated growth of this market, which connects more and more people of different ages and encompasses different family’s generations.”

Father’s Day is ideal for promoting the line of gamers’ monitors, says Gustavo Yoshida, product and trade manager at LG Electronics. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, the gamer market has grown a lot, earning more than US $ 126 billion in 2020, that is 12% more than in 2019, according to the consultancy SuperData. It is an important period for the sale of technological products, the favorites for Brazilians on that date.” Check out the highlights of the sector below.
